New stratigraphic study of the Pedirka Basin

A new NTGS Record focuses on the stratigraphy of the Pedirka Basin, a Permian to Triassic intra-cratonic sedimentary basin located in the southeast corner of the Northern Territory and extending into South Australia and Queensland. The basin comprises a stacked succession of glacial, fluvioglacial, fluvial, lacustrine, coal swamp and continental redbed deposits. It has potential to be an important energy resource for the Northern Territory.

In the new Record, in-depth stratigraphic logging is used to update and refine facies and depositional environment interpretations from the NT portion of the Pedirka Basin. New palynology results described in the Record more tightly constrain the ages of stratigraphic intervals and provided additional information about depositional environment. These results have direct relevance for the exploration of a range of subsurface resources including energy systems (petroleum, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, geothermal), as well as groundwater.
