The Northern Territory currently has seven major operating mines, with at least five smaller mines in operation, and other mines in care and maintenance.

The combined production value of these operations, including extractive operations, in 2019-20 totalled $4.40 billion.

Smaller operating mines in the Northern Territory include the:

  • Edna Beryl gold mine near Tennant Creek
  • Dhupuma Plateau bauxite mine near Gove
  • Sill 80 ilmenite mine in the Roper region
  • Harts Range garnet sand mine in Central Australia.

The Frances Creek mine (Trendsheer Holdings Pty Ltd), Cosmo Mine (Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd) and Merlin diamond mine in the McArthur Basin are in care and maintenance, but have the potential to resume operations in the short to medium term.
