Major operating mines

The major operating mines* in the Northern Territory are:

• Tanami Operations - Newmont (gold)
• McArthur River mine - Glencore PLC (zinc-lead-silver)
• Groote Eylandt mine - South32 Ltd (manganese)
• Gove mine - Rio Tinto (bauxite)
• Dhupuma Plateau mine - Gulkula Mining Pty Ltd (bauxite) near Gove.
• Roper Bar mine- Nathan River Resources Pty Ltd (iron ore)
• Warrego Rehabilitation Project - North Iron Ltd (magnetite)
• Sill 80 ilmenite mine - Australian Ilmenite Resources Pty Ltd in the Roper region (ilmenite)

The Finniss lithium mine - Core Lithium Ltd (spodumene concentrate) moved into care and maintenance in June 2024. Peko Tailings - Elmore Ltd (magnetite) went into care and maintenance in April 2024. Ranger uranium - Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) mine near Jabiru ceased production in January 2021 and is now in closure being rehabilitated. Bootu Creek mine - OM Manganese Ltd (manganese) is also in care and maintenance.
