Major operating mines

The major operating mines* in the Northern Territory are:

• Tanami Operations - Newmont (gold)
• Nobles Gold Operations - Tennant Mining (gold)
• McArthur River mine - Glencore PLC (zinc-lead-silver)
• Groote Eylandt mine - South32 Ltd (manganese)
• Finniss Operations - Core Lithium Ltd (lithium)
• Gove mine - Rio Tinto (bauxite)
• Dhupuma Plateau mine - Gulkula Mining Pty Ltd (bauxite) near Gove.
• Sill 80 ilmenite mine - Australian Ilmenite Resources Pty Ltd in the Roper region (ilmenite)
• Peko Tailings mine - Central Core Pty Ltd - Peko Tailings (iron)

Roper Bar mine- Nathan River Resources Pty Ltd (iron ore) went into administration in May 2026. Northern Iron Ltd's Warrego Rehabilitation Project went into administration in April 2025 and has been in care and maintenance since July 2025. The project has recently been purchased, with plans to return to production in 2026. Bootu Creek mine - OM Manganese Ltd (manganese) is also in care and maintenance. Ranger uranium - Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) mine near Jabiru ceased production in January 2021 and is now in closure being rehabilitated.
