Minerals Industry Development

Developing the Northern Territory's minerals industry

The Mineral Development Taskforce (Taskforce) delivered its final report and 28 recommendations to the NT Government for consideration in late 2022, which was the accepted in-principal in March 2023.

Stakeholder feedback on the Final Report was sought from April to July 2023 to inform the final NT Government position on the Taskforce recommendations. 18 submissions were received covering a broad range of stakeholder groups across industry, land councils, proponents, peak industry bodies, environmental groups, and the community.

The NT Government has now formally accepted the recommendations made by the Taskforce and will progress their implementation. To facilitate this an implementation plan has been developed and can be found in the table below.

The implementation plan will be delivered over 4 years from 2023 to 2026.

The implementation plan is a living resource that will be subject to updates and changes as implementation progresses, and through periodic reviews and evaluation processes. This will provide flexibility in the delivery to ensure the implementation process remains effective and appropriate, as well as account for evolving mining landscape and influential factors such as technology advancements and climate change.

The Minerals Industry Development team within the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade will lead the implementation on behalf of Government and will continue to work with stakeholders throughout implementation.

A mineral industry development plan is being developed with release anticipated in 2024. This plan is expected to set out more detailed pathways, processes and implementation actions for development of the Territory minerals industry in line with the MDT recommendations.
