Working at NTGS

The Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) offers geoscientists a unique opportunity to live and work in the beautiful, remote and rugged landscapes of the Northern Territory. The spectacular Archaean to Cenozoic geology of the Northern Territory includes sedimentary basins showcasing well exposed successions and multi-deformed basement terranes across the metamorphic range.

The Northern Territory's geology is host to world class and diverse energy and mineral systems with vast areas still underexplored. With access to extensive regional geophysical and geological datasets, working at the NTGS provides a rewarding opportunity to use the full range of geoscience skills to document, interpret and communicate the geology and resource potential of the Northern Territory.

We also regularly seek skilled candidates in the following areas:

  • geologists
  • geophysicists
  • data and spatial scientists
  • technical officers for fieldwork and core facilities.

Successful candidates will be based in either the Darwin or Alice Springs office. NTGS offers a diverse, inclusive and safe team environment, where you’ll be working alongside others who are passionate about geology and growing the Territory's exploration sector.

Working at NTGS3

"One of the best parts of working for NTGS is the opportunity to get back to basics and undertake fundamental regional geology. Many areas of the NT haven’t been researched extensively, leaving room to describe new units, make fresh interpretations, and tease apart the geological history of some of Australia’s oldest geological terranes. Working in a team of experts, I feel we can make meaningful contributions to the understanding of Australian geology." Cait Stuart, Project Geologist, NTGS

Field season

We undertake the majority of field activities during the Territory’s dry season (May through till September). This maximises the best of the weather for working outdoors and remote camping.

Our fieldwork takes us to distant and untouched parts of the Territory, sometimes only accessible by helicopter.

Health and safety are a priority at NTGS, and all appropriate training will be provided to ensure the safety of all team members working remotely.

Stakeholder engagement is critical to the work we do on aboriginal and pastoral land. Your role will be supported by the NTGS Aboriginal Engagement and Land Access team to ensure we meet any obligations respectfully.
