Minerals

The minerals sector is one of the Northern Territory’s largest industries and a major driver of regional economic activity.

In 2022-23, mineral production in the Northern Territory (NT) was $4.38 billion, with most production coming from eight major mines. The industry directly employs around 3,500 people PDF (4.5 MB) and represents one of the Territory’s largest sources of own-sourced revenue.

The NT has a strong pipeline of emerging mining projects that is set to grow and diversify the sector into new commodities and regions. The NT has strengths in non-ferrous metals, critical minerals and precious metals, and is ideally placed to be a stable source of minerals to the markets of Asia. Vast areas of the Territory remain underexplored, with new geoscience data highlighting the potential of regions with no outcropping geology.

Further information regarding regulatory requirements can be found on the NT Government website.
