Producing basin

Production

The Amadeus Basin accounts for all past and current onshore gas and oil production in the Northern Territory, with pilot production set to commence in the Beetaloo Sub-basin in 2026.

Current onshore gas and oil production is sourced from the Mereenie, Palm Valley and Dingo fields in the northern Amadeu Basin, operated by Central Petroleum Ltd.

In 2025, onshore gas production totalled 12.53 billion standard cubic feet (Bscf), a 7% increase on 2024. Onshore oil production was 0.102 million barrels (MMbbl), sourced entirely from the Mereenie Field.

Cumulative production from the Amadeus Basin to the end of 2025 totals approximately 520 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas and 19 million barrels of oil.

Annual updated petroleum production from the Amadeus Basin fields plus onshore oil and gas reserves and resources for combined Northern Territory (NT) onshore basins can be found on the Department of Mining and Energy website.

First production of appraisal gas from the Beetaloo Sub-basin is planned for the second half of 2026, with both Tamboran Resources and Beetaloo Energy Australia Ltd both commencing pilot production to supply gas into the Northern Territory market.
