After 30 years with the Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS), including 20 years at its helm, Dr Ian ‘Bunge’ Scrimgeour leaves an outstanding legacy of advancing the Territory’s geological knowledge, expanding access to geoscience data, and providing exceptional leadership and service to the Territory.
Under his leadership, NTGS has significantly expanded the coverage of fundamental geoscience datasets across the Territory, advanced geological understanding and digital data accessibility, and strengthened its national and international reputation, helping to promote the Territory as a destination for resources sector investment.
Ian has also played a key role in building the Annual Geoscience Exploration Seminar (AGES) into a highly regarded event, bringing together NTGS geoscientists, research collaborators and industry to share discoveries, exchange knowledge and showcase the latest exploration techniques and technologies. He was also pivotal in establishing the Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations program, which has supported exploration through co-funding for 19 years, and securing ongoing funding for the Resourcing the Territory program to deliver targeted precompetitive geoscience, address critical knowledge and data gaps, and support mineral and petroleum exploration across the Territory.
NTGS welcomes Dr Jo Whelan as its new Senior Executive Director, who will lead the Survey into its next chapter of geoscience discovery, digital innovation, industry collaboration and support for mineral and energy exploration across the Territory. Jo is an experienced geoscientist with nearly 20 years at NTGS. She holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Melbourne and has held a range of senior roles across NTGS including in Regional Geoscience and most recently, as Director Industry Reporting and Core Facilities. In her current role Jo has overseen the management and delivery of valuable exploration datasets, statutory reporting functions, and the NTGS drill core and geological sample collections. She brings extensive technical expertise, proven leadership experience, a commitment to innovation and a comprehensive understanding of the Territory's geology and resource potential.
