A significant new onshore petroleum exploration area has been released in the Beetaloo Sub‑basin, opening 50 full and part blocks for competitive bidding. Covering approximately 4,000 sqkm—more than five times the size of Singapore—the release was showcased at the recent North American Prospect Expo (NAPE) in Houston, one of the world’s largest upstream energy investment events.
The release area, EPNT26‑1, is strategically positioned near the Amadeus Gas Pipeline and the Stuart Highway, and sits among high‑quality shale gas acreage held by Tamboran Resources, Daly Waters Energy, Beetaloo Energy Australia and Santos. Adjacent acreage EP98 is expected to deliver the first Beetaloo gas for NT use from mid‑2026.
The new acreage aims to support domestic energy security, stimulate regional economic development and create jobs across the Barkly region.
Applications close at 4pm ACST on Friday, 31 July 2026. Full details, including geoscience data and application guidelines, are available on the Department of Mining and Energy’s website.
