Latest zircon dating sheds light on Birrindudu Basin stratigraphy

NTGS Record 2005-004 presents new U-Pb SHRIMP zircon geochronological results collected as part of the ongoing Northern Territory Geological Survey - Geoscience Australia SHRIMP geochronology project under the National Collaborative Framework agreement and Geoscience Australia's 2016-2024 Exploring for the Future program. Results are derived from six sedimentary samples collected from the Birrindudu Basin in the Northern Territory.

Detrital zircon U-Pb analyses were conducted on representative samples of six sedimentary formations, namely the Burtawurta Formation (Wattie Group) and the previously undated Timber Creek Formation, Bynoe Formation, Mount Gordon Sandstone, Banyan Formation and Battle Creek Formation (all Bullita Group). The study aimed to produce detrital zircon age spectra and establish maximum depositional ages for all the sampled units. These findings can be integrated with existing geological data to improve interpretations of sedimentary provenances and contribute to a broader understanding of Proterozoic stratigraphy across northern Australia.

The new dates for the Bullita Group enhance stratigraphic resolution within the Birrindudu Basin and enable better correlation of Mesoproterozoic strata across the greater McArthur Basin.
