This work formalises the previously informally named and described, unexposed Neoproterozoic stratigraphic succession that overlies the Roper Group in the Beetaloo Sub-basin. The three units are now included in the existing stratigraphic succession of the northern Georgina Basin, which improves the understanding of the basin’s palaeogeography and the extent of the Beetaloo Sub-basin as a depocentre. It also provides the framework for consistent stratigraphic nomenclature by industry, researchers and other geoscientists working in this region.
A review of the lithological characteristics and age relationships of these units has identified this post-Roper Group succession as a subsurface continuation of the Kiana Group (basal Georgina Basin). The 'Jamison sandstone' and 'Hayfield mudstone' are equated with the Bukalara Sandstone and Cox Formation respectively of the Kiana Group. The name Hayfield Sandstone Member (previously 'Hayfield sandstone member' of the-'Hayfield mudstone') is retained as a member of the Cox Formation. New formal redefinitions of the Kiana Group, Bukalara Sandstone, Cox Formation and Hayfield Sandstone Member are included in the report.
