The last in the series of video presentations from AGES 2023 focuses on the prospectivity of the Territory's onshore basins by a key research collaborator and NTGS geoscientists.
Vincent Crombez from CRISO presents work being undertaken to better understand Northern Australia onshore basins (eg McArthur Basin, Birrindudu Basin, Beetaloo Sub-basin and Isa Superbasin). He highlights multiple case studies to unravel the architecture and evolution of Proterozoic sedimentary basins and their relevance for exploration of mineral resources and energy. Amber Jarrett presents a compilation of new data collected by NTGS to assess the source rock potential of the Pedirka Basin. Organic geochemistry and organic petrology were analysed to determine the source rock potential of units and their prospectivity for a range of resources, ie petroleum, natural hydrogen, geosequestration, coal, groundwater, and geothermal. Charles Verdel, Geologist in the NTGS' Basins Geoscience team, presents work undertaken to develop and constrain the stratigraphic and tectonic framework of the western Cambrian to Devonian Warburton Basin. Findings are consistent with previous studies that suggest the Warburton Basin is the ‘missing link’ between unmetamorphosed Cambrian–Ordovician strata of the Amadeus Basin and Cambrian–Ordovician metasediments of the Thomson Orogen in Queensland. Tim Munson, Senior Geologist in the NTGS' Basins Geoscience team, presents work undertaken to constrain the ages of sedimentary units, test proposed intrabasinal correlations; and refine existing palaeoenvironmental interpretations of the Late Palaeoproterozoic Glyde package, which includes the McArthur Group and economically significant Barney Creek Formation.
