New model for copper and tungsten mineralisation in the northeastern Aileron Province

NTGSrecord2022-0001

This record characterises copper and tungsten (± molybdenite) mineralisation in the Molyhil area, Bonya Hills area and Jervois mineral field in the northeastern Aileron Province. Research combining new and previously published petrological, structural, geochemical, chronological, and stable isotope data with field mapping was undertaken at a district-scale.

The results were used to develop a new genetic model for the copper and tungsten (± molybdenite) mineralisation. This mineralisation is interpreted to be epigenetic and to have formed after the main episode Paleoproterozoic metamorphism and deformation in this area . Mineralisation is associated with magmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow and alteration related to intrusion of ca 1.73– 1.70 Ga fractionated felsic magmas, including those that formed the Marshall Granite and Samarkand Pegmatite. The study provides insight into sources, pathways and traps for metals that may have implications for mineral exploration in the northeastern Aileron Province.
